The eighth US MONOPOLY Championship was held September 19th & 20th, 1987, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Gary Peters won the tournament over a field of 48 state champions plus the returning national champion, Jim Forbes. His prize was a $5K savings bond (which he apparently donated to charity) as well as a trip to the 1988 World Championship in London. Players ranged in age from 14 to 54 years, including "coal miners to insurance company presidents."[1] Six of the 48 players were women.[1] Bankers were "volunteers from American Security Bank and the National Bank of Washington."[1] Phil Orbanes was the judge.
